There’s something about a charity bake sale that makes it the talk of the town. On April 29, 2015, Lavonne wore a more cheerful look than it usually does, courtesy The Refreshing Summer Bake Sale, organised by the Diplome in Patisserie students, as part of their curriculum.
While their chefs were their mentors, this was an opportunity given to the students to put into practice everything they’ve been learning in the classroom and the kitchen over the last four months. Right from planning the menu after sessions of brainstorming with their classmates, creating an exhaustive list of all the supplies they required, budgeting, and actually making the delicious treats, to finding the NGO they would support, working on the décor and publicity, and doing everything there was to do on D-Day, the entire event was handled by the student body.
And if you were there to witness it, it was a full house! Also, you would agree that the students left no stone unturned organizing this event! And what made it even more special was that it had a charity element attached to it. Proceeds of The Refreshing Summer Bake Sale will go to U&I (http://www.uandi.org.in/), a city-based N.G.O., which works towards the education and empowerment of underprivileged children and youth.

At the Bake Sale, I was filled with a sense of accomplishment. The most grueling few days and a month’s hard work and planning had finally paid off!
A bake sale of such a magnitude definitely has its shares of challenges and huffs and puffs! From working with a large group of people, with a million brilliant ideas, to providing an array of dishes at the charity event, this bake sale has been an overwhelming experience.
It has helped me understand how to work on a larger scale catering to an actual customer as opposed to a training session. And most importantly, it has taught me how to deal with all the pressure and cope with failures to give the best performance possible.
At the end of it all, nothing compares to the rush one experiences when the doors open to eager customers, all waiting to be a part of the event.

The bake sale that we organised was one of the most intense and satisfying experiences I’ve ever had. For me, the most memorable moment would be opening the doors at 4:30 pm and seeing the sea of patrons pouring in and hearing that their preferred treat was all sold out! Credit goes to my chefs for giving us the opportunity to organise the bake sale and experience the intensity of working on schedule, under pressure, giving us the space to improvise and finally understand the feeling of accomplishment.
Studying in Lavonne has probably been the best choice I’ve ever made in my life. The course is so intense and challenging, and worth every second spent. One of the things that I love about Lavonne is that here, they make you get your basics right and then allow your creativity to run free. If anyone plans on pursuing pastry arts, this is the place to be!
